NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES RECAP

Well the NFC and the AFC have crowned their 2009 Champions and the Super Bowl match up is set. We have the NO. 1 seeded New Orleans Saints as Champions of the NFC and we have the No. 1 seeded Indianapolis Colts as Champions of the AFC. Lets take a closer look at each of the Conference Championship games.

THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NEW ORLEANS 31 MINNESOTA 28 IN OT

The Minnesota Vikings dominated every phase of this game but two, the turnover battle and the scoreboard. The Vikings won time of possession by almost ten minutes, they more than doubled the Saints in first downs 31 to 15, the Vikings had 475 total yards to the Saints 257 but the Vikings had five turnovers to the Saints 1. The -4 in the turnover battle really done the Vikings in. Minnesota had a chance to go up 21 to 14 at the half, after recovering Reggie Bush's muffed punt in the Saints red zone, but Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson fumbled a hand off exchange inside the Saints ten yard line and they went into the half tied at 14.

The Vikings defense really played well in the second half as they shut down the Saints high powered offense. It was Viking turnovers that set the Saints offense up for points. Even with all of the turnovers by the Vikings, the game was tied at 28 when their defense got the ball back for Brett Favre and their offense for one last attempt to win the game and send the Vikings to their first Super Bowl in 33 years. With the Vikings within their kicker's field goal range with about 25 seconds left on the clock they faced a third down. The Vikings wanted to get a few more yards to give the kicker a better shot at a game winner and they get flagged for a five yard penalty for 12 men in the huddle. What a dumb and costly mistake that would be. Facing about a 56 or 57 yard field goal if they didn't gain any more yards Brett Favre knew he needed to get some yards for his kicker. Favre took the snap and he rolled to his right to buy some time and he had a running lane that he could have probably picked up 8 to 10 yards if he would have ran with the ball. Instead of running Favre passed across his body into the middle of the field to try to get the ball to Sidney Rice but the play turned into their most costly turnover of the game as it was picked off.

The game went to overtime and the Saints won the coin toss drove the ball into Minnesota territory having to overcome a 4th and inches to keep their drive alive. Then the Vikings were flagged for pass interference to move the Saints into field goal range. The Saints sent in their little-known kicker Garrett Hartley to try a 40 yard field goal for a chance to go to their first Super Bowl. THE KICK WAS GOOD, THE KICK WAS GOOD THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!

THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME INDIANAPOLIS 30 NEW YORK JETS 17

In the AFC Championship Game the Cinderella New York Jets jumped out to a 17 to 6 second quarter lead on the NO. 1 seeded Indianapolis Colts. Then Peyton Manning and the Colts woke up as Manning threw a TD pass to cut the Jets lead to 17 to 13 at the half.

The second half was all Colts as they out scored the Jets 17 to 0 to get the win and another trip to the Super Bowl. This will be the Colts second Super Bowl appearance in the last four years. They defeated the Bears in Miami in the Super Bowl three years ago. The Colts got a huge game from Peyton Manning as he was 26 of 39 for 377 yards and 3 TD passes. The Colts also got a huge game from Haitian native Pierre Garcon as he had 11 catches for 153 yards and 1 TD. SO IT IS THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS AND THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS IN THE SUPER BOWL THIS SEASON!!!

DID YOU KNOW? The Minnesota Vikings have lost five straight NFC Title games.

DID YOU KNOW? Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell is only the fifth rookie Head Coach to reach the Super Bowl.

THE ARMCHAIR COACH went 1 and 1 in predicting the NFL Conference Championship Games last week. My record for the season is 228 and 106 for a percentage of .683.

The ArmChair Coach will have his Super Bowl preview blog next Wednesday. Stay tuned.

NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Well we are through the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs and we had three of the four home teams get victories over the weekend. In the NFC the New Orleans Saints defeated the Arizona Cardinals 45 to 10. The Saints answered the question I had about could they flip the switch back on. The answer was yes, at least against the Cardinals. Also in the NFC, the Minnesota Vikings got a dominating defensive performance and great offensive performances from Brett Favre and Sidney Rice as they defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34 to 3.

In the AFC, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Baltimore Ravens 20 to 3. The Colts showed that they really do seem to be the class of the AFC. The New York Jets continue to be Cinderella during these playoffs as they were the only road team to get a win in the Divisional round, as they defeated the San Diego Chargers 17 to 14. The Jets got a strong game running the football from rookie Shon Greene and they continued to play strong defense. So lets look at both of the NFL Conference Championship Games scheduled for Sunday.

NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

AFC Championship..... New York Jets @ Indianapolis..... The Cinderella Jets are playing very good football at the right time of the season. They are also playing with a chip on their shoulders, to prove to the nay sayers that they do belong in the playoffs. The Colts are where everyone thought they would be, the AFC favorites to go to the Super Bowl. On paper the Colts should win this game, they have Peyton Manning at QB and the Jets have rookie Mark Sanchez at QB. The Colts have several play makers on offense, but the Jets have the equalizer, the best defense in the NFL. Both teams have rookie Head Coaches coaching in their first Conference Championship Game. The Jets will give the Colts all that they want in this game, but I see Peyton Manning making a play late to send his team to the Super Bowl..... Indianapolis 20 New York Jets 17

NFC Championship..... Minnesota @ New Orleans..... These were definitely the two best teams in the NFC for most of the season. They both sputtered down the stretch but they seem to have righted their ships just in time to play for the chance to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Both of these teams are dome teams and they play very well at home in front of loud and enthusiastic fans. The Saints are 7 and 2 at home, including their playoff win last week, and the Vikings are 4 and 4 on the road. The game features the NFC's two best offenses and the NFL's top two rated QB's in the Saints Drew Brees and the Vikings Brett Favre. I see the Vikings defense being the difference in this game as they are playing lights out..... Minnesota 31 New Orleans 23

THE ARMCHAIR COACH went 1 and 3 in predicting the Divisional playoffs round last week. My record for the season is 227 and 105 for a percentage of .684.

Until Next Time.

NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS

The NFL Wildcard Playoffs round was if anything surprising. I was very surprised that the N.Y. Jets were able to go into Cincinnati and beat the Bengals for a second consecutive week. I was very surprised that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots lost at home to the Baltimore Ravens. Does this mean that New England's era of domination is over? I think the game that surprised me the most was Green Bay's loss at Arizona. Coming into the playoffs the Packers were one of the hottest teams in the NFC. The Packers and Cardinals game was really the only close and exciting game of the weekend. I am still in shock that Green Bay would score 45 points against the Cardinals and it would not be enough to win. That just goes to show that Arizona's QB Kurt Warner can still get it done, especially in the playoffs. I was not at all surprised that the Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles for a second consecutive week. The Cowboys appear to be the hottest team in the NFC, as they are peaking at just the right time. I think I should take Tony Romo off of my Top 5 over-rated athletes list and replace him with the Eagles Donovan McNabb.

NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS ROUND

Saturday..... NFC..... Arizona @ New Orleans..... The Cardinals are the defending NFC Champions and they look like they are not going to give up their title without a fight. The Saints are the No.1 seed in the NFC playoffs, but ended their regular season on a three game losing streak. The question I have about this game is, can the Saints flip the switch back on to get back to playing like they were for the first 13 games of the season? I don't think they can. I see Curt Warner finding away to win this game for the Cardinals..... Arizona 38 New Orleans 34

Saturday..... AFC..... Baltimore @ Indianapolis..... The Ravens looked very good as they dismantled Tom Brady and the Patriots last weekend, especially running the ball and on defense. They seam to be playing their best football of the season, when it counts most. The Colts reeled off 14 straight wins to start their season, only to lose their last two games while resting key starters after clinching home field advantage. I have the same question about the Colts as I did about the Saints, can they flip the switch back on? It would not surprise me at all to see the Ravens win this game, but I believe Peyton Manning will make one more play than the Ravens Joe Flacco..... Indiannapolis 24 Baltimore 21

Sunday..... NFC..... Dallas @ Minnesota..... To me this is the most interesting game of the Divisional round. Can the wiley veteran Brett Favre defeat the improving Tony Romo and move one step closer to another Super Bowl appearance? Can the red hot Dallas Cowboys win another big game in January? Can the Minnesota Vikings get back to playing the kind of football that they played the first eleven games of the season? Can Sidney Rice make a big game winning catch for the Vikings like he did in High School for the Gaffney Indians? As much as I would like to see the Minnesota Vikings win this game and see Brett Favre and Sidney Rice play for a chance to go to the Super Bowl next week, I don't think it will happen..... Dallas 27 Minnesota 20

Sunday..... AFC..... New York Jets @ San Diego..... The surprising Jets have a very good defense and have only given up eight TD passes this season. The Chargers have been red hot for about the last 10 or 11 games and they feature a great passing offense led by Phillip Rivers. The questions I have about this game is, can rookie QB Mark Sanchez make a couple of plays with the game on the line? Can the Chargers running game produce enough plays to help out their passing game? I believe this game will be closer than people expect..... San Diego 23 N.Y. Jets 17

THE ARMCHAIR COACH went 3 and 5 in game predictions last week. My record for the season is 226 and 102 for a percentage of .689.

Until Next Wednesday.

SPORTS WEEKEND PREVIEW ( 19th Edition )

TIDE ROLLS TO BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Alabama Crimson Tide over came early mistakes to defeat the Texas Longhorns 37 to 21 to win the 2009 National Championship. The Tide's defense knocked Texas All-American QB Colt McCoy out of the game on the Horn's first series with a shoulder injury. He would not return to the game. After McCoy left the game Alabama over came a 6 to 0 deficit and took control of the game. The Longhorns seemed to lose their confidence on both sides of the ball after losing their leader. The Crimson Tide seemed to gain more and more confidence after the injury to Colt McCoy and their defense dominated and their running game took over. The Tide led 24 to 6 at halftime. Alabama got conservative in the second half and Texas freshman QB Garrett Gilbert was able to throw a couple of second half TD passes to get the Horns back to within 24 to 21. The Tide's defense forced two more turnovers to set up two 4th quarter scores to clinch the National Title for Alabama. It is a shame that Colt McCoy had to miss most of the game with injury. That is definitely not the way he expected to end his college career.

NFL PLAYOFFS

Saturday..... AFC..... N.Y. Jets @ Cincinnati..... The Jets won big over the Bengals last week to get into the playoffs. I don't think they can do it two weeks in a row..... Cincinnati 24 N.Y. Jets 17

Saturday..... NFC..... Philadelphia @ Dallas..... This is another rematch from last week. The Cowboys won big to win the NFC East Division Title. I look for this game to be a lot closer but with the same result..... Dallas 20 Philadelphia 16

Sunday..... AFC..... Baltimore @ New England..... The Patriots lost a key cog to their offense when Wes Welker went down with injury last week. It would not surprise me to see the Ravens win this game, but I believe New England will find away to win at home..... New England 23 Baltimore 20

Sunday..... NFC..... Green Bay @ Arizona..... Curt Warner of the Cardinals has been very good in the post season. The Green Bay Packers have finished the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the NFL. The Packers won big over the Cardinals last week and they will win again this week..... Green Bay 27 Arizona 17

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The Clemson Tigers have a very big early ACC game that they must win as they host Boston College. The Tigers are coming off a big loss at Duke in their ACC opener. They can't afford to open the ACC schedule with back to back losses with a game against North Carolina looming next week.

GENERAL VIEWS ( 18th Edition )

Here we are with only two bowl games left. It has been a very unpredictable bowl season this year as a lot of the favorites have been beaten. At last count there have been 16 underdogs that have won their bowl game. I can't ever remember the bowls being so unpredictable. Last night in the Orange Bowl, the Iowa Hawkeyes completely dominated both lines of scrimmage against Georgia Tech. I didn't see that one coming. After doing more research on Georgia Tech I found that three of the last four teams to beat the Yellow Jackets have had seven or more days to prepare for their Spread Option attack. Dabo Swinney and the other ACC coaches need to copy the blueprint of Iowa's defensive game plan against Tech.

As we start a new year and a new decade I have a lot of questions pertaining to the sports world for the coming year. I am going to tell you what some of them are and if you have any opinions or feedback I would love to hear from you. Here they are:

QUESTIONS THAT I AM WONDERING ABOUT FOR THE COMING YEAR

(1) Will Tiger Woods be back playing golf by the Masters?

(2) Will Brett Favre retire again this year for the third time?

(3) Who will be the new Super Bowl Champions ?

(4) Will the Atlanta Braves make the playoffs this season?

(5) Will the New York Yankees buy another World Series Championship?

(6) Will any player in Major League Baseball hit 60 plus Home runs this season?

(7) Can the LA Lakers repeat as NBA World Champions?

(8) Can the North Carolina Tar Heels repeat as National Champions in College basketball?

(9) Can Dale Earnhardt Jr. win a Nascar race this year?

(10) Can the Gaffney Indians boys basketball team make it back to Columbia for another chance to finish the job, and win the State Championship?

(11) What school will Clemson backup QB Willy Corn transfer?

These are some of the questions that I have been wondering about for the coming sports year. I have some more questions about the second half of the sports year that I will get into at a later date. It will be fun and interesting to sit back and see how these questions will be answered. This is one of the many reasons why I love sports so much. LETS ENJOY!

Until Friday.

SPORTS WEEKEND REVIEW ( 18th Edition )

DUKE POUNDS CLEMSON!!

The 7th ranked Duke Blue Devils got sweet revenge on the 21st ranked Clemson Tigers on Sunday night at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils had lost the previous two games to the Tigers, but took advantage of bad shooting by the Tigers in the 1st half, as they ran out to a 30 to 12 halftime lead. The Tigers started the 2nd half on an 11 to 0 run to cut the lead to 7 but could never get any closer. The Devils won the game 74 to 53. Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith each scored 22 points for Coach K's Blue Devils.

GAMECOCKS LAY A HUGE EGG IN BIRMINGHAM

The South Carolina Gamecocks played like the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday at the PAPAJOHNS.COM Bowl. The Gamecocks did what they usually do after they have a big win, as they were coming off of a big win against their rivals the Clemson Tigers, THEY DID NOT SHOW UP AGAINST THE UCONN HUSKIES!! The Gamecocks were dominated from the start by their Big East opponent as they did not get their first 1st down until the 2nd quarter. The Gamecocks were held to 205 yards by one of the worst defenses in the Big East Conference.
Steve Spurrier apologized to the Gamecock fans that made the trip to Birmingham an witnessed their embarrassment. The Cocks finish their season 7 and 6 for a second year in a row.

PANTHERS FINISH SEASON STRONG

The Carolina Panthers finished their NFL season strong as they won their 3rd game in a row and 4 of 5 to finish their season 8 and 8. It was a disappointing season in Carolina, as they missed the playoffs, but they finished strong and have a lot of momentum heading into the off season. The Panthers defeated the NFC South Champion New Orleans Saints 23 to 10. Jonathan Stewart rushed for 125 yards and 1 TD to lead the Carolina offense.

Lets look at the remainder of the Bowl games to be played this week.

Monday..... Fiesta Bowl..... Boise State vs TCU..... This should be a very good ball game between two unbeaten BCS Bowl busters. It is Boise State's high scoring offense against TCU's very strong defense. I see the defense getting the W..... TCU 24 Boise State 21

Tuesday..... Orange Bowl..... Georgia Tech vs Iowa..... The powerful Georgia Tech running game against a good Iowa defense. I don't think the Hawkeyes have enough offense to stay with the Yellow Jackets..... Georgia Tech 34 Iowa 21

Wednesday..... GMAC Bowl..... Central Michigan vs Troy..... I see Troy having a hard time stopping Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour..... Central Michigan 31 Troy 23

Thursday..... BCS Championship..... Texas vs Alabama..... Two storied programs the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide. This has a chance to be a great football game. This also has a chance to be a rout in Bama's favor. Which Texas team will show up? I believe Texas will show up to play a good football game, but I see Alabama finding away to win in the 4th quarter..... Alabama 24 Texas 20

THE ARMCHAIR COACH went 10 and 5 in games predicted last week. My record for the season is 223 and 97 for a percentage of .697.

Until Wednesday.
