STORYBOOK ENDING FOR CHESNEE'S DEAN JONES

It has been a long and successful coaching career for Dean Jones at Chesnee High School. He has been the Head Coach of the Eagles baseball team for 47 years. He has had some great teams and some great players over the years in Chesnee. He had three Baseball State Championships in the decade of the 1980's. He is why Chesnee is known as a baseball school and town. He announced awhile back that the 2010 baseball season would be his last at the helm of the Chesnee Eagles baseball program. The Eagles were coming off of a successful season in 2009, but they lost in the State Championship Series to Bishop England. The Eagles returned several key and talented players for this years team, including arguably the best pitcher that Coach Jones has had in his 47 years in Chesnee Brandon Henderson. The setting was set for Coach Dean Jones to go out with a storybook ending and win the State Championship in his last season before retirement. The Eagles rolled through their regular season winning their Region Championship, setting the stage for their playoff run. The Eagles won their District Title and the 2A Upperstate Championship, pretty much without breaking a sweat. So the setting was right for Coach Dean Jones to go into retirement with a storybook ending and win another State Championship. The Eagles had to go on the road to Hannahan for the first game of the best of three State Championship Series. The Eagles rolled to a 10 to 0 victory behind ace pitcher Brandon Henderson. So the stage was set for the Chesnee Eagles to come home to Dean Jones Baseball Stadium and win the State Championship for Dean Jones in his final home game in the stadium that is named for him. Not only would it be a storybook ending for an illustrious career, but a Best Selling story as well, to win at home. The Eagles came out nervous and fell behind in the game 3 to 0 going to the bottom of the 7th inning. The Eagles rallied to within 3 to 2, but came up a run short of the Best Seller. The Eagles and the Hawks had to travel to Lexington for the third and deciding game of the series and Coach Jones had his ace Brandon Henderson ready for the challenge. The Chesnee Eagles rolled to another shutout by Henderson and the 2010 2A State Baseball Championship. The win gave Coach Dean Jones his 4th State Championship in his 47th and last season with the Chesnee Eagles. The Chesnee Eagles and Head Coach Dean Jones didn't get their Best Seller, but they got their storybook ending.

DID YOU KNOW? Chesnee ace pitcher Brandon Henderson was drafted in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Until Next Time.
