WEEK 19 FOOTBALL PICKS

I hope all you sports fans had a Merry Christmas. The ArmChair Coach had a great Christmas celebrating with family and friends. I had no blog last week because of the Christmas holiday.

*****The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to the Carolina Panthers for winning their second game of the season and still locking up the Number 1 over-all pick in the 2011 NFL draft*****

The ArmChair Coach went 5 and 5 in the Week 17 football picks. I did not make any picks in Week 18. My record for the season is 129 and 41 for a percentage of .759. Lets look at this weeks picks.

COLLEGE BOWL GAMES

Meineke Car Bowl..... Clemson vs South Florida..... Points will probably be low in this game. Both the Tigers and the Bulls have struggled on offense and they both have very good defenses..... Clemson 20 South Florida 17

Chick-Fil-A Bowl..... South Carolina vs Florida State..... Steve Spurrier is facing his old nemeses from his Florida days. The Gamecocks are also trying to win a bowl game after two straight poor bowl performances. The Cocks should leave the Georgia Dome happy this time..... South Carolina 24 Florida State 21

Holiday Bowl..... Nebraska vs Washington..... The Corn Huskers are still down after losing the Big 12 Title to Oklahoma. After a slow start, they will prevail over the Huskies..... Nebraska 31 Washington 17

Sun Bowl..... Notre Dame vs Miami..... This is a hard game to pick. Miami has the better athletes, but how well will they be prepared to play after the distraction of losing their Head Coach? I am saying the Canes in a close one..... Miami 23 Notre Dame 17

Capital One Bowl..... Michigan State vs Alabama..... The defending champs will end a disappointing season on a high..... Alabama 27 Michigan State 17

Rose Bowl..... TCU vs Wisconsin..... Both of these teams have an argument that they should be playing for the National Title. Could be the best game of the bowl season..... Wisconsin 24 TCU 21

Fiesta Bowl..... Connecticut vs Oklahoma..... Both of these teams feel like they have something to prove. Connecticut wants to prove that they belong and Oklahoma wants to prove that they can win a BCS Bowl Game, after losing the last few they have played..... Oklahoma 28 Connecticut 13

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ Atlanta..... The Panthers end a dreadful season with another loss..... Atlanta 20 Carolina 13

Chicago @ Green Bay..... If the Packers win this game they are in the playoffs. They will get it done..... Green Bay 24 Chicago 17

Miami @ New England..... The Dolphins have had a very strange season. They were 1 and 7 at home and they are 6 and 1 on the road. They are on the road, but..... New England 20 Miami 16

DID YOU KNOW? Steve Spurrier had a 5 and 8 and 1 record against Florida State while coaching at Florida.

I will have my next blog, with next weeks picks, on Monday January 3rd. I will be picking the remaining bowl games and the wild card round of the NFL playoffs.

Until Next Time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE ARMCHAIR COACH!!!

New Mexico Bowl

BYU vs UTEP..... I believe the Cougars will be to much for the Miners..... BYU 31 UTEP 21

Humanitarian Bowl

Northern Illinois vs Fresno State..... The Huskies have had the better season, but they will still be down after losing their Conference Title Game to Miami Ohio..... Fresno State 27 Northern Illinois 24

New Orleans Bowl

Troy vs Ohio..... This game is a toss-up. Should be entertaining..... Troy 20 Ohio 16

NFL GAMES

Arizona @ Carolina..... The Panthers would benefit more by losing this game. They lose another close one..... Arizona 23 Carolina 17

Buffalo @ Miami..... The Dolphins have played very well on the road and not so well at home. They are due for a good home performance..... Miami 17 Buffalo 10

Green Bay @ New England..... The Patriots are on a roll and they are at home. The Packers may or may not have Aaron Rodgers at QB. The PATs roll..... New England 31 Green Bay 17

Washington @ Dallas..... With these teams struggles this season, this game has lost some of its luster. Should be a good game..... Dallas 24 Washington 20

Atlanta @ Seattle..... The Falcons are rolling toward a NFC South Championship. They can't overlook the Seahawks..... Atlanta 27 Seattle 17

Did You Know? Mark Huff is in his 14th season as Head Basketball Coach at Gaffney High School. He has a record of 257 and 87 at Gaffney and Four State 4A Championships. His over-all record is 400 and 145 and he had a 5th State Title while at Southside High School.

WEEK 16 FOOTBALL PICKS

Lets look at some of the highlights from Week 15 of the football season. In High School, we crowned 2010 State Champions, as Byrnes and Northwestern won in 4A Division 1 and Division 2. Myrtle Beach won in 3A and Pageland-Central won in 2A. In College, Virginia Tech won the ACC Championship, Auburn pounded South Carolina, to win the SEC Championship and Oklahoma rallied to win the Big 12 Championship over Nebraska. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers blew a 14 to 0 lead and lost 31 to 14 to the Seattle Seahawks.

*****The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to all of the State Champions crowned last week at the Weekend Of Champions, Byrnes, Northwestern, Myrtle Beach and Pageland-Central*****

The ArmChair Coach went 6 and 4 in football picks last week. My record for the season is 118 and 32 for a percentage of .787. Lets look at this weeks picks.

COLLEGE GAMES

Army vs Navy..... This is one of the best rivalries in College Football. Navy has been pretty dominate in this game in recent years and they will win it again..... Navy 27 Army 20

FCS Quarterfinals

Georgia Southern @ Wofford..... The Terriers won a close one at Georgia Southern earlier this season. The Eagles have really come on strong late in the season. This will be another close one..... Georgia Southern 23 Wofford 21

Villanova @ Appalachian State..... This has a chance to be a heck of a game. The crowd will be large and vocal in Boone, North Carolina for this one. It will make a difference..... Appalachian State 20 Villanova 16

New Hampshire @ Deleware..... The fans in Deleware love their Blue Hens. It will be a tough environment for New Hampshire to win in..... Deleware 26 New Hampshire 19

North Dakota State @ Eastern Washington..... We have yet another interesting game. It should be close and I believe the home team will get the win..... Eastern Washington 20 North Dakota State 14

NFL GAMES

Atlanta @ Carolina..... The Falcons are playing for possible home field advantage in the NFC Playoffs and the Panthers are playing for the Number 1 over-all pick in the 2011 NFL draft. You know where this game is heading..... Atlanta 28 Carolina 16

Miami @ New York Jets..... The Dolphins lost to the lowly Browns last week and they need a win. The Jets were embarrassed by the Patriots last week and they are mad..... New York Jets 23 Miami 16

Green Bay @ Detroit..... The Packers need this game to keep pace with the Bears in the NFC North. The Lions are 2 and 10, but they play everyone tough..... Green Bay 24 Detroit 20

Philadelphia @ Dallas..... The Eagles are trying to win the NFC East and a win in Dallas would be huge. The Cowboys have looked like a new team since the coaching change. I smell upset..... Dallas 27 Philadelphia 24

New England @ Chicago..... This battle between the leader of the AFC East and the NFC North goes to..... New England 23 Chicago 21

Until Next Time.

WEEK 15 FOOTBALL PICKS

Lets look at some of the highlights from week 14 of the football season. In High School, the Northwestern Trojans won the battle of unbeatens with Goose Creek 41 to 34, Dorman and Byrnes won their Big 16 Semi-final games, to set up their battle for the 4A Division 1 Title. In College, South Carolina went into Death Valley and defeated Clemson 29 to 7, Auburn came from behind to beat Alabama 28 to 27 in the Iron Bowl. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers found another way to lose, as old reliable John Kasay missed a game winning 42-yard field goal against the Cleveland Browns.

*****The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to the South Carolina Gamecocks for their 29 to 7 win over Clemson. It was also the first time they have beaten the Tigers in back to back seasons since 1970*****

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 1 in football picks last week. My record for the season is 112 and 28 for a percentage of .800. Lets look at this weeks picks.

HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

4A Division 1 Championship..... Dorman vs Byrnes..... This is a rematch of last seasons 4A Division 1 Championship game that saw Dorman upset Byrnes. The shoe is on the other foot this season, as Dorman is the defending champ and the favorite to repeat. This should be a typical game between the Cavaliers and the Rebels and could go either way. I am sure Byrnes would like to get payback from last season, but I see Charone Peake being the difference..... Dorman 17 Byrnes 14

4A Division 2 Championship..... Greenwood vs Northwestern..... This is a game between contrasting styles, as Greenwood has a good running game and a very good defense and Northwestern has the best passing offense that I have seen all season. I have seen both of these teams play and I have said for awhile that Northwestern is the best team I have seen all season. Greenwood has a little better defense but Northwestern's offense looks like an NFL team and their defense is pretty good as well..... Northwestern 35 Greenwood 20

3A Championship..... South Pointe vs Myrtle Beach..... This could be the game of the weekend. Both teams have very good offenses and very good defenses. South Pointe is the Number 1 Ranked team in 3A and Myrtle Beach was the 3A runner-up last season. I see Jadeveon Clowney being the difference in this one..... South Pointe 24 Myrtle Beach 22

2A Championship..... Pageland-Central vs Dillon..... This is the third season in a row that these two powers have met in this game. Dillon has won the first two in close hard fought battles. Both of these teams have very good offenses and very good defenses. Central has revenge on their side, but Dillon has the better defense and I see that as the difference..... Dillon 24 Pageland-Central 21

COLLEGE GAMES

ACC Championship Game..... Florida State vs Virginia Tech..... The Hokies have won 9 games in a row after a 1 and 2 start and Florida State got some help from Maryland to get to this game. It has been pretty clear for awhile that Virginia Tech is the class of the ACC this season. I look for the Noles to play them tough, but they will come up short..... Virginia Tech 23 Florida State 20

SEC Championship Game..... South Carolina vs Auburn..... This has been a season of firsts for the Gamecocks. Can they win their first SEC Championship? It has been a magical season for the Tigers filled with comebacks and finding ways to win games. Will they find a way to win this game? It will be a great football game and no the Gamecocks will not win their 1st SEC Championship. Yes, Auburn will find a way to win this game..... Auburn 34 South Carolina 24

Big 12 Championship Game..... Nebraska vs Oklahoma..... This is the biggest game in this storied rivalry in quiet a while. Nebraska has been good most of this season, but they seem to have taken a step backward in recent weeks. Oklahoma seems to be peaking at the right time..... Oklahoma 27 Nebraska 21

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ Seattle..... The way the Panthers lost last week makes you wonder if they are going to win another game this season. They come close again, but they lose again..... Seattle 20 Carolina 17

Cleveland @ Miami..... The Dolphins were impressive last week and look to make a late playoff push. They will push past the Browns this week..... Miami 21 Cleveland 13

San Francisco @ Green Bay..... Believe it or not, the 49ers are still in the NFC West race. The Packers need to bounce back from their loss at Atlanta last week. They will..... Green Bay 24 San Francisco 13

Did You Know? Since 2005, the Clemson Tigers have lost 21 out of 30 games decided by 7 points or less.

Until Next Time.

WEEK 14 FOOTBALL PICKS

It's hard to believe, but here we are at Thanksgiving. Eating, watching football, eating some more and watching more football, all weekend long. Before we look at this weeks football picks, lets look at some of the highlights from last weeks games. In High School, the Gaffney Indians fell to Irmo 12 to 7, to be eliminated from the playoffs. Dorman and Byrnes both won big and they host 3rd round playoff games this week. In College, Clemson took care of business at Wake Forest 30 to 10. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers fell to 1 and 9, as they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens 37 to 13.

*****The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to Clemson QB Kyle Parker, as he completed 15 of 17 for 194 yards and 2 TD passes in the Tigers 30 to 10 win over Wake Forest*****

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 1 in football picks last week. My record for the season is 103 and 27 for a percentage of .792. Lets look at this weeks picks.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS

Irmo @ Dorman..... This game is a contrast in style. Irmo is big and physical and Dorman is small and fast. I go with small and fast..... Dorman 28 Irmo 20

Lexington @ Byrnes..... If this game was played in Lexington I would be tempted to pick the Wildcats. It's not and I'm not..... Byrnes 28 Lexington 17

Northwestern @ Goose Creek..... This should be the best game in the state this week. Both teams are 13 and 0. They have contrasting styles, as Northwestern likes to throw the ball all over the field and Goose Creek likes to run and run some more. I see Northwestern's experience of playing and losing in the 4A Division 2 Finals the last two seasons as motivation enough to make the difference..... Northwestern 34 Goose Creek 31

Pageland-Central @ Woodruff..... This is the other game that I would buy a ticket to see. Central is 13 and 0 and Woodruff is 10 and 3, but they are on a roll..... Pageland-Central 27 Woodruff 23

COLLEGE GAMES

South Carolina @ Clemson..... On paper the Gamecocks should roll in this one. The game is not played on paper and I believe the Tigers will keep it close..... South Carolina 24
Clemson 20

Auburn @ Alabama..... The Tigers are unbeaten, but I don't think they can win this game in Tuskaloosa..... Alabama 24 Auburn 21

Michigan @ Ohio State..... This is a huge game for Michigan Head Coach Rich Rodriguez. They play it tough, but the Buckeyes prevail..... Ohio State 34 Michigan 24

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ Cleveland..... Two teams that are not going anywhere this season. At least the Browns have shown a little bit of life..... Cleveland 20 Carolina 10

Miami @ Oakland..... The Dolphins have played better on the road this season. They are on the road and they will play well enough to win..... Miami 23 Oakland 20

Green Bay @ Atlanta..... This should be a heck of a football game. The difference in this game is the Falcons are almost unbeatable at home in the dome..... Atlanta 27 Green Bay 23

DID YOU KNOW? It has been 40 years since the South Carolina Gamecocks have beaten the Clemson Tigers in back to back seasons.

Until Next Time.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

For a more in depth preview of this game, go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Fort Dorchester @ Dorman..... Fort Dorchester has a tall order in this game. A long trip to Roebuck to play the defending State Champs and an even longer trip back to the coast after a Dorman victory..... Dorman 31 Fort Dorchester 14

Williston-Elco @ Christ Church..... This game has the potential to be another shootout. I see the defending State 1A Division 2 Champion Blue Devils going home happy..... Williston-Elco 45 Christ Church 31

Byrnes @ Dutch Fork..... Byrnes seems to be peaking at the right time. Dutch Fork is a red hot team, having won 9 in a row. Should be a good one..... Byrnes 28 Dutch Fork 24

COLLEGE GAMES

Clemson @ Wake Forest..... The Tigers are coming off of another gut wrenching loss. They have not won on the road all season. They tend to struggle in Winston-Salem. Everything seems to be stacked against them. I just have a feeling that they are going to find a way to win this game..... Clemson 27 Wake Forest 13

Troy @ South Carolina..... The Gamecocks are coming off of arguably their programs biggest victory. Their emotions will be down. Talent will win this game..... South Carolina 28 Troy 14

Florida State @ Maryland..... This is a huge game in the ACC Atlantic Division. The Noles won a big game last week against Clemson. They need a big win on the road this week..... Florida State 27 Maryland 20

NFL GAMES

Baltimore @ Carolina..... Can things get any worse for the Panthers? It has been a season of turnovers, injuries and losses. They will lose again..... Baltimore 24 Carolina 10

Green Bay @ Minnesota..... Will this be Brett Favre's last game against the Packers? I say yes. The Packers will keep the Vikings season spiralling down..... Green Bay 26 Minnesota 21

Detroit @ Dallas..... The Cowboys looked like a different team last week, in their big win over the Giants. Can they make it two in a row? Heck yeah..... Dallas 23 Detroit 10

Did You Know? The South Carolina Gamecocks winning the SEC East last week, is their first championship of any kind in football, since winning the ACC Championship in 1969.

Until Next Time.

Thursday, November 11, 2010

WEEK 12 FOOTBALL PICKS

We are through week 11 of the football season. It seems like the season just started. Lets look at some of the highlights from an exciting week 10, on the gridiron. In High School, the Gaffney Indians pounded longtime rival Spartanburg, 48 to 20. In College, the Clemson Tigers won an ugly game against N.C. State, 14 to 13 and South Carolina was beaten at home by Arkansas, 41 to 20. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers lost to the New Orleans Saints, 34 to 3 and lost QB Matt Moore for the season with an injury. Also in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys were embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers, 45 to 7. The Cowboys also fired Head Coach Wade Phillips.

*****The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to Clemson punter Dawson Zimmerson for saving not only the Tigers game with N.C. State on Saturday, but their season as well. His catch of a bad snap and punt late in their game against the Wolfpack was huge for the Tigers*****

Chesnee @ Pageland-Central..... The Chesnee Eagles season ended in Pageland last year. It ends in Pageland again..... Pageland-Central 28 Chesnee 10

Cheraw @ Woodruff..... This is a game with two traditional powers. Woodruff is flying high and Cheraw is a little down..... Woodruff 34 Cheraw 17

Boiling Springs @ Lexington..... On paper Lexington should win this game. Boiling Springs has played a tougher schedule and will be playoff ready..... Boiling Springs 27 Lexington 24

COLLEGE GAMES

Clemson @ Florida State..... The Tigers need to win this game to stay alive in the Atlantic Division race. The Tigers have only won one game in Tallahassee since Florida State has been in the ACC. The Tigers play well, but come up short..... Florida State 24 Clemson 20

South Carolina @ Florida..... Three or four weeks ago I would have picked the Gamecocks in this game. The Gamecocks are not playing that well now and the Gators are putting it together at the right time. Florida wins the SEC East..... Florida 27 South Carolina 21

Wofford @ Appalachian State..... This is the game for the Southern Conference Championship. The Terriers are on a roll and the Mountaineers fell last week. I just don't see Appalachian losing two in a row..... Appalachian State 24 Wofford 20

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ Tampa Bay..... The win less Buffalo Bills is the only thing keeping the Panthers from being the worst team in the NFL. They fall to 1 and 8 on the season..... Tampa Bay 20 Carolina 13

Tennessee @ Miami..... This should be a tough tight football game. I see the Titans finding a way to win at the end..... Tennessee 23 Miami 21

Minnesota @ Chicago..... The traveling circus of the Minnesota Vikings continues to find a way to stay in the race. They will find another win in Chicago..... Minnesota 26 Chicago 17

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

Gaffney @ Northwestern..... This is one of the two biggest games in the state this week. The Indians have been on a roll since starting the season 1 and 2, as they have won 6 in a row. The Trojans are unbeaten and ranked NO. 2 in the state and they have rolled over everyone on their schedule. The game for the Region 3 4A Championship could go either way and I have gone back and forth all week on who I think will win. In a game this even, I am going to go with the home team..... Northwestern 31 Gaffney 28
For a more in depth preview of this game go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Byrnes @ Dorman..... This is the other of the two biggest games in the state this week. This is a rematch of the Division 1 4A State Championship game from last season. The Rebels appear to be on a roll since two early season losses. Their level of competition has not been very good the last few weeks. The Cavaliers are still unbeaten and ranked NO.1 in the state and they have rolled into this game with little resistance. These are two very good football teams that don't like each other. I have been going back and forth on this game all week as well. With a game this close I am going with the home team..... Dorman 24 Byrnes 21

Christ Church @ Landrum..... This is another huge game, as it is the game for the Region 2 1A Championship. The Cardinals are at home and they will play hard. I expect a close game with Christ Church coming out on top..... Christ Church 31 Landrum 21

Tennessee @ South Carolina..... Steve Spurrier would love to lay 50 points on the Vols this week. They probably won't, but they will get the win..... South Carolina 34 Tennessee 21

Georgia vs Florida @ Jacksonville..... The Bulldogs are playing much better, after a slow start. The Gators have lost their last two games and are struggling on offense. It would not be shocking for the Bulldogs to win this game. I just don't see Florida losing three in a row..... Florida 23 Georgia 20

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ St. Louis..... The Panthers got their first win last week against San Francisco. I just have a hunch, that they will make it 2 in a row..... Carolina 20 St. Louis 16

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

For a more in depth preview of this game, go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Pendleton @ Chesnee..... This is another huge game for the Eagles. They came up short in their big game against Palmetto last week. They are due to win a big game..... Chesnee 27 Pendleton 20

Boiling Springs @ Riverside..... This is a big game for the Bulldogs in their quest to return to the playoffs. They will get it done..... Boiling Springs 31 Riverside 21

Landrum @ Blacksburg..... This is a huge game for both teams. Already having a Region loss, the Wildcats need this game to have any hope of winning the Region Championship. They come close, but lose a tight one..... Landrum 24 Blacksburg 21

NFL GAMES

San Francisco @ Carolina..... Two bad teams. The 49ers got their first win last week. The Panthers had an open date. I believe the Panthers will get their first win..... Carolina 20 San Francisco 17

Pittsburg @ Miami..... This should be a tough tight game. Normally, I would go with the home team in a game this close, but I have a feeling the Steelers will find a way to win..... Pittsburg 24 Miami 20

Minnesota @ Green Bay..... The Packers are beat up and need a big win. The Vikings got a big win over Dallas last week. I see Brett Favre staying unbeaten against the Packers..... Minnesota 27 Green Bay 23

WEEK 8 FOOTBALL PICKS

Time sure does fly when you are having fun. Here we are in Week 8 of the football season already. Lets look at some of the highlights from Week 7. In College, the upset of the year happened in Columbia, as the South Carolina Gamecocks beat NO1 Alabama 35 to 21. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers continued their dismal season, as they fell to the Chicago Bears 23 to 6. The Panthers offense is probably the worst I have ever seen in the NFL.

Chesnee @ Palmetto..... The winner of this game will be the favorites to win the Region Title. The winner will be..... Chesnee 34 Palmetto 28

COLLEGE GAMES

Maryland @ Clemson..... Being a Clemson fan, Maryland is one team that I really want to beat, after losing to them the last two seasons. The Tigers really need a win and they will get it..... Clemson 27 Maryland 10

South Carolina @ Kentucky..... This is a possible trap game for the Gamecocks. They will be emotionally down after big win over Alabama. They will find a way to win in the 4th quarter..... South Carolina 24 Kentucky 20

Mississippi State @ Florida..... The Bulldogs have a history of playing the Gators tough. Florida will be mad after two straight losses..... Florida 31 Mississippi State 17

NFL GAMES

Miami @ Green Bay..... The Packers are beat up with injuries, but they are at home. The Dolphins are glad that their trip to Green Bay is in October instead of December. The Dolphins in a close one..... Miami 17 Green Bay 13

Cleveland @ Pittsburg..... The Steelers went 3 and 1 without Big Ben. They have him back this week and the rest of the NFL better watch out..... Pittsburg 23 Cleveland 10

WEEK 7 FOOTBALL PICKS

Here we are in Week 7 of the football season already. Lets look back at some of the highlights from Week 6. In High School, Boiling Springs rolled over J.L. Mann to set up their showdown with Dorman this week. In College, Clemson lost to Miami 30 to 21 and Alabama pounded Florida 31 to 6, to show the nation that they are the team to beat again this season. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers took the Super Bowl Champion Saints down to the wire, before losing 16 to 14.

*************The ArmChair Coach Game Ball Of The Week goes to Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee for his 59-yard field goal on the last play of the game to beat the Indiannapolis Colts 31 to 28*************

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 1 in football picks last weekend. My record for the season is 51 and 9 for a percentage of .850. Lets look at this weekends picks.

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

Clover @ Gaffney..... This is the third meeting between these two programs. The two previous games have been 4th quarter games and I expect this game to be the same. The Indians will pull away late..... Gaffney 33 Clover 21
For a more in depth preview of this match-up, go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Dorman @ Boiling Springs..... This will be a measuring stick to see how much the Bulldogs have improved. They will play well, but the Cavaliers will hold them off..... Dorman 27 Boiling Springs 21

Northwestern @ Spartanburg..... The Trojans have rolled through their schedule for an unbeaten record. The Vikings have been up and down and they need a signature win to build momentum for the Region 3 schedule. The Trojans should pull away late..... Northwestern 28 Spartanburg 17

Blacksburg @ Christ Church..... The Wildcats have won four in a row, but this will be a measuring stick game to see if they are contenders or pretenders. They should play them close on the road..... Christ Church 35 Blacksburg 21

COLLEGE GAMES

Clemson @ North Carolina..... This is a very big ACC game for both teams. The Tigers and the Heels have each lost a conference game and can't afford to start the ACC season 0 and 2. The Tigers have been close the last two weeks against two quality opponents. They will break through with a huge road win in Chapel Hill..... Clemson 27 North Carolina 20

Alabama @ South Carolina..... The Crimson Tide plays their third straight against a ranked opponent. They could be a little flat starting out but they will get it together. The Gamecocks have had two weeks to prepare and will play well. The Tide will take control in the second half..... Alabama 28 South Carolina 13

Florida State @ Miami..... This is a huge game in the ACC and a huge rivalry game. It should be a great football game. I see the Canes and Noles going back and forth with the Canes scoring last..... Miami 29 Florida State 24

NFL GAMES

Chicago @ Carolina..... The Panthers played better last week, as their offense scored two TDs in their loss to the Saints. It wouldn't surprise me to see Carolina finally get one in the win column, but I think the Bears will win a close one..... Chicago 17 Carolina 13

Green Bay @ Washington..... I think the Packers are the better team, but I have a feeling the Redskins will find a way to win at home..... Washington 20 Green Bay 17

Tennessee @ Dallas..... The Cowboys got their first win in their last game and I see them getting their second win this week against the Titans..... Dallas 23 Tennessee 17

Until Next Time.

EXCITING RIDE FOR THE ATLANTA BRAVES

The Atlanta Braves have been on an exciting ride this baseball season. Long time Manager Bobby Cox announced that he was retiring at the end of this season. The players have played very hard trying to seed Cox out with another post season appearance. The Braves have not been to the post season since 2005. Braves fans were spoiled by the 14 straight Division Titles that ended in 2006.

The season started with the Braves losing 14 of their first 22 games in April. They started playing better in May and took over first place in the National League East by the end of May. Troy Glaus had a monster month of May with the bat to lead the offense. The Braves also introduced their young phenom and the new face of their franchise, Jason Heyward. The young Heyward would get off to a fast start, as he homered in his first game on opening day.

The Braves are a team of 25 good baseball players that know how to play the game. They have suffered through a lot of injuries and they have had people fill in and pick up the slack. Pitcher Jair Jurrgens missed several weeks, due to injury and Kris Medlin steps in and does a very good job in the rotation. They would eventually lose Medlin and veteran Chipper Jones for the season and they kept on getting good fill in play from Omar Infante and Brooks Conrad. The Braves bench has been very big to the teams success this season. Every one on the bench has come up big to help them win ball games. Brooks Conrad has hit 8 HR's this season and 7 of them has been from the 7th inning or later. He has had a lot of big hits to win ball games, especially a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Cincinnati Reds. Eric Hinske has also been big off the bench, as he has hit 3 pinch hit HR's and has had a lot of starts in the outfield and at first base. The Braves bullpen has been very good this season as it has been anchored by closer Billy Wagner. They have also had great seasons from rookie lefty Jonny Venters, veteran righthander Peter Moylan and others. The starting rotation has been pretty solid as well, led by 17 game winner Tim Hudson, 16 game winner Derek Lowe and 10 game winner Tommy Hanson.

The Braves have also made a lot of changes as the season has gone along. They traded controversial short stop Yunell Escobar to Toronto for veteran short stop Alex Gonzalez. They also acquired outfielder Rick Ankiel and reliever Kyle Farnsworth from Kansas City at the trade deadline. The Braves also got first baseman Derek Lee from the Chicago Cubs in August, after Chipper Jones season ending injury. The Braves have only right fielder Jason Heyward and catcher Brian McCann still starting on an everyday basis from their opening day line-up, since Martin Prado was lost for the season in late September.

It has been a long up and down season for the Atlanta Braves in 2010, but it has been very interesting and exciting. They were able to keep this ride going, as they clinched the National League wild card on Sunday, with their 8 to 7 victory over the Phillies. The Braves are limping into the post season with injuries and they haven't played well in September, but anything can happen once you get in the playoffs. Lets see if they can send Bobby Cox into retirement with another World Series Title. The 2010 season for the Atlanta Braves has been a heck of a ride.

Check out my Week 7 Football Picks on Thursday afternoon. Until Next Time.

WEEK 6 FOOTBALL PICKS

Week 5 of the football season has come and gone and we had some exciting games and some not so exciting games. Lets look at some of the highlights. In High School, the Gaffney Indians rallied from a 24 to 7 deficit, to defeat Greenville 33 to 31. Chesnee rallied and won 45 to 42 in triple overtime over Chapman. In College, the South Carolina Gamecocks came home from Auburn with a heartbreaking loss to the Tigers, 35 to 27. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers lost again, as they fell to the Bengals 20 to 7, in a bad football game.

I am going to bring back The Arm Chair Coach Game Ball of The Week this week. I will have a Game Ball of The Week winner for the rest of the football season. This weeks winner is......

********************The ArmChair Coach Game Ball of The Week goes to Gaffney Indians QB DeEdward Burris, as he threw for 336 yards and 4 TD passes and rushed for 1 TD in Gaffney's comeback win over Greenville last Friday night******************************

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 1 in football picks last weekend. My record for the season is 42 and 8 for a percentage of .840. Lets look at this weeks picks.

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

J.L. Mann @ Boiling Springs..... The Bulldogs played their best game of the season last week in a win over Mauldin. They will build on that big win with another..... Boiling Springs 24 J.L. Mann 16

Byrnes @ Mauldin..... The Byrnes Rebels defeated Mauldin twice last season. The Mavericks remember and they have had this game circled on their calendar. They play better this week than they did against Boiling Springs, but they come up short..... Byrnes 34 Mauldin 20

Dorman @ Hillcrest..... The Cavaliers are just playing well enough to win. They should win this game big, but will they? The Cavaliers get it done..... Dorman 35 Hillcrest 10

Chesnee @ Liberty..... After playing three emotional games in a row, will the Eagles have anything left? Could this be a trap game? The Eagles will be a little flat, but they will have enough to defeat the Red Devils..... Chesnee 30 Liberty 14

COLLEGE GAMES

Miami @ Clemson..... The last three meetings between the Canes and the Tigers have gone to overtime. I see the Tigers winning a close game in regulation this time..... Clemson 24 Miami 20

Florida @ Alabama..... This monster game is a rematch of last season's SEC Championship Game. The Tide rolled in that one and they will roll in this one too..... Alabama 23 Florida 17

Oklahoma vs Texas @ Dallas..... The Red River shootout should be another great game between these two old rivals. The Sooners have lost the last two to Texas, but should win this one..... Oklahoma 20 Texas 17

NFL GAMES

Carolina @ New Orleans..... I see the Panthers playing better on offense in this game, as Jimmy Clausen has another week of practice with the first team under his belt..... New Orleans 24 Carolina 13

Detroit @ Green Bay..... The Lions have lost 17 straight on the road. Make it 18 straight..... Green Bay 21 Detroit 13

New England @ Miami..... This should be a hard fought game between division rivals. A share of first place is at stake. The Patriots will find away to win at the end..... New England 23 Miami 20

Did You Know? Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney is 2 and 7 in games decided by 7-points or less since he has been the Tigers Head Coach. His overall record at Clemson is 15 and 9, heading into the Tigers game against Miami this weekend.

Until Next Time.

WEEK 5 FOOTBALL PICKS

There were some very interesting football games last weekend. Lets look at some of the results. In High School, the swagger is back at The Reservation, as the Gaffney Indians defeated the Byrnes Rebels 26 to 16. In College, the battle between the Tigers, on the plains in Alabama, had Auburn coming from behind and defeating Clemson in overtime 27 to 24. This game was the most physical game I have seen in quiet awhile. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers continued to struggle on offense, as they fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20 to 7. The Panthers plan a QB change this week to try and jump start a struggling offense. Rookie Jimmy Clausen gets his first NFL start.

The ArmChair Coach went 7 and 3 in football picks last week. My record for the season is 33 and 7 for a percentage of .825. Lets look at this weeks picks.

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

Greenville @ Gaffney..... If recent history continues, this will be another tight game between the Red Raiders and the Indians. Since 2006, this game has been decided by 10 points or less with Gaffney winning 3 of the 4 meetings. This game will be close as well..... Gaffney 20 Greenville 13 For a more in depth preview of this game go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Blacksburg @ Southside Christian..... The interesting thing about this game is, can Blacksburg continue to ride their horse Chase Hames to victory? Hames has rushed for over 800 yards and 12 total TD's the past two weeks, as the Wildcats beat Latta and Liberty. I see them riding him to victory number three in a row..... Blacksburg 34 Southside Christian 24

Chesnee @ Chapman..... The Eagles are playing their third consecutive rivalry game. They lost to Woodruff and Broome the previous two weeks. Will they have any emotion left? They will lose in a shootout..... Chapman 35 Chesnee 32

Chesterfield @ Pageland-Central..... I had the opportunity to see this match-up last season and saw the Chesterfield Rams win their second in a row over the Central Eagles. The Eagles have had this game circled on their calendar since last season and they want it bad. They will get it..... Pageland-Central 24 Chesterfield 20

COLLEGE GAMES

South Carolina @ Auburn..... This will be the Gamecocks first road test of the season. Auburn is a very hostile place to play, as Clemson found out last week. The Tigers are a little beat up, but they should be ready to play this week after their tough overtime win last week..... Auburn 24 South Carolina 20

Alabama @ Arkansas..... The Hogs got a big road win at Georgia last week, while the Tide cruised at Duke. The Alabama defense will be the difference in this one..... Alabama 27 Arkansas 17

Oregon State @ Boise State..... This is another big game for Boise State against a good BCS conference opponent. The Broncos need to win this game and look impressive in doing so..... Boise State 38 Oregon State 20

NFL GAMES

Cincinnati @ Carolina..... The Panthers are making a QB change this week to see if they can jump start a struggling offense. Rookie Jimmy Clausen gets his first NFL start and the results will be the same, a Carolina loss..... Cincinnati 20 Carolina 13

NY Jets @ Miami..... The Dolphins are 2 and 0 but they have struggled on offense. The Jets are coming off of a big win over the Patriots and they have one of the best defenses in the NFL. This should be a typical Dolphins Jets game..... NY Jets 21 Miami 17

Pittsburg @ Tampa Bay..... This is a battle between two surprising 2 and 0 teams. The Steelers are still without Big Ben at QB, but they should find a way to win this game against the young Bucs..... Pittsburg 16 Tampa bay 10

Did You Know? Blacksburg High School's Sr. RB Chase Hames was chosen as the Max Preps National High School back of the week. Hames carried the ball 45 times for 444 yards and 5 total TDs in the Wildcats 41 to 27 win over Liberty last Friday night.

Until Next Time.

WEEK 4 FOOTBALL PICKS

There were some interesting results in football last weekend. In High School, the Gaffney Indians finally put together a complete game against Union County and Dorman continued to find ways to keep winning. In College, the South Carolina Gamecocks made a statement with a big win over Georgia. In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers continued their struggles on offense as they fell to the New York Giants.

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 1 in football picks last weekend and my record for the season is 26 and 4 for a percentage of .867. Lets look at some of the games for this weekend.

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

Byrnes @ Gaffney..... These two powers played their most complete games of the season last week. The Indians owe the Rebels after they ran up the score last season..... Gaffney 20 Byrnes 17 For a more in depth preview of this game, go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Rock Hill @ South Pointe..... In a short time this has turned into a pretty good rivalry. The last couple of years this was a Region game, but this year it is a non region match-up. It should be a very physical game and I see the home team getting the win..... South Pointe 24 Rock Hill 20

Blythewood @ Northwestern..... So far in this young season, the Northwestern Trojans have looked like the best team in the state. They continue to roll..... Northwestern 38 Blythewood 14

Dorman @ T.L. Hanna..... The Top Ranked Cavaliers are undefeated, but they have yet to put together a complete performance. They should roll to victory in this one..... Dorman 35 T. L. Hanna 10

COLLEGE GAMES

Clemson @ Auburn..... After playing two games against inferior opponents, the Clemson Tigers will finally get tested. Auburn was tested on the road at Mississippi State last Thursday night and passed. Clemson goes into a hostile environment for the first time this season and they will come up short..... Auburn 20 Clemson 17

Furman @ South Carolina..... The Gamecocks are involved in a possible trap game with Furman this week. After their big win over Georgia last week they will play at Auburn next week. The Gamecocks have a history of being flat in games like this. This is a different Carolina team and they should roll to victory..... South Carolina 34 Furman 10

Georgia Tech @ North Carolina..... The Tarheels had a week off to prepare for the option game of Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets laid an egg against Kansas last week. This has the potential to be a great football game. I give the Heels a slight edge at home..... North Carolina 23 Georgia Tech 21

NFL GAMES

Tampa Bay @ Carolina..... This is the home opener for the Panthers. Carolina lost to the Giants last week and Tampa Bay defeated Cleveland. The Panthers will get the running game going and they will get better play from the QB position this week that should lead to a home win..... Carolina 20 Tampa Bay 17

Miami @ Minnesota..... The Vikings lost their NFC Championship rematch with the Saints last week. Brett Favre looked like a rusty 40 something QB in the process. Favre plays better this week and the Vikings should prevail..... Minnesota 20 Miami 14

Buffalo @ Green Bay..... The Packers are home on the unfrozen tundra of Lambeau Field and should give the hometown fans a happy trip back home..... Green Bay 27 Buffalo 13

Enjoy your sports weekend.

Until Next Time.

WEEK 3 FOOTBALL PICKS

There were some very good games and some surprising scores on the schedule last week. This weeks schedule will be even more interesting, as we have some monster games on the College football schedule and we have the start of the NFL season.

The ArmChair Coach went 7 and 3 in football picks last week and I am 17 and 3 for the season for a percentage of .850. Lets look at some of the interesting match-ups in High School, College and the NFL for this week.

HIGH SCHOOL

Gaffney @ Union County..... These two old rivals have been snake bit so far this season. I see the Indians going on the road and bringing home a victory this week..... Gaffney 26 Union County 17 For a more in depth preview of this game go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Greenwood @ Dorman..... Both of these teams defeated Gaffney the last two weeks. The Eagles win was surprising but the Cavaliers win was expected. If Greenwood can get their Option offense going it will be close. The Cavaliers will get it done in the 4th quarter..... Dorman 24 Greenwood 20

Anson County (NC) @ Chesterfield..... This is a border battle that should be just a tune-up for Chesterfield, as they get ready for rival Pageland-Central next week..... Chesterfield 38 Anson County 14

Woodruff @ Chesnee..... These two old rivals are meeting as non-region members this season. The Eagles are 2 and 0 and the Wolverines are 0 and 2. I see Woodruff winning this game because they have played the toughest schedule so far..... Woodruff 31 Chesnee 27

COLLEGE

Georgia @ South Carolina..... Being a Clemson fan I would like nothing better than to see Georgia pound South Carolina. I do not see that happening. I think the Gamecocks are better than Georgia at this point in the season..... South Carolina 20 Georgia 17

Penn State @ Alabama..... This is a very good early season game that will have the atmosphere of a bowl game. This will be a good measuring stick for both teams and I see the Tide winning at home..... Alabama 24 Penn State 21

Miami @ Ohio State..... This is another monster match-up that looks like a bowl game. I see the Buckeyes finding away to win it late..... Ohio State 27 Miami 20

Presbyterian @ Clemson..... Normally I wouldn't pick this game, but being a Clemson fan I had to do it. It would take a total meltdown by the Tigers for them to lose this game. I thought it would be fun to see how close I could come to the final score..... Clemson 56 Presbyterian 6

NFL

Carolina @ NY Giants..... This will be the first regular season game in the New Meadowlands Stadium. The Panthers went through the whole preseason without an offensive TD. They will score an offensive TD in this game, but they will come up short on the scoreboard..... NY Giants 23 Carolina 16

Miami @ Buffalo..... This is the best time of the season for the Dolphins to travel to Buffalo, because of the warm weather. The Bills will be unveiling their new secret weapon in C.J. Spiller, but the Dolphins are the better team and should get the victory..... Miami 23 Buffalo 13

Until Next Time.

WEEK 2 FOOTBALL PICKS

We had some interesting High School football games last week in Week 1 of the season. We have some traditional rivalry games on the schedule this week, as well as a renewal of a rivalry between two of the states most storied programs. We also have the opening of the College football season and we will look at some of the key games on the schedule.

The ArmChair Coach went 9 and 0 in game picks last week and 1 and 0 in Week 0 and my record for the season is 10 and 0 for a percentage of 1.ooo. The games start getting a little more difficult this week as we add some College games to the mix. Next week we will add some NFL games. Lets look at the Week 2 football picks.

High School Games

Gaffney @ Greenwood..... This is the first match-up between these two storied programs since the 1990's. I see the Indians going on the road and getting a hard fought win..... Gaffney 20 Greenwood 14. For a more in depth preview of this game go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Spartanburg @ Dorman..... These two traditional rivals have played twice a year the last couple of years. Historically the Vikings have dominated this rivalry, but in recent years the Cavaliers have turned the table. They turn the table once again..... Dorman 28 Spartanburg 17

Cheraw @ Chesterfield..... I had the opportunity to see this traditional rivalry a couple of years ago and there is one thing for certain, They Do Not Like Each Other! The Rams go for their 4th win in a row over the Braves and they will get it..... Chesterfield 33 Cheraw 15

Broome @ Union County..... This has been a close game the last couple of years and this year will be no exception..... Union County 23 Broome 14

Landrum @ Chesnee..... This is a good rivalry that is sort of under the radar. The Cardinals won big last week and the Eagles won a close one over Chase. The Eagles play better this week and get the win..... Chesnee 23 Landrum 17

Indian Land @ Blacksburg..... The Warriors have been hard on the Wildcats in recent years and they will again this year..... Indian Land 17 Blacksburg 13

College Games

Southern Mississippi @ South Carolina..... This game has a chance to be closer than most people think..... South Carolina 24 Southern Mississippi 16

North Texas @ Clemson..... The Tigers are ready to hit someone not wearing orange. The post C.J. Spiller era begins with a big win for the Tigers..... Clemson 34 North Texas 10

North Carolina vs LSU at The Georgia Dome..... If you like offense you probably won't like this game, as you have two very good defenses and questionable offenses..... LSU 13 North Carolina 10

Boise State vs Virginia Tech at Washington, D.C. ..... This game between Top 10 teams is very intriguing. Boise State needs to win to stay in the BCS Bowl and National Championship race. Virginia Tech needs this win to stay in National Championship race and it would be a very big win for the ACC. I see the physical play of Virginia Tech wearing down Boise State in the 4th quarter..... Virginia Tech 27 Boise State 24

Enjoy your sports weekend.

Until next Time.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WEEK 1

The High School football season started last Friday night with a few Week 0 games. The game that I went to was the Gaffney @ Boiling Springs game. What was a blowout statistically and score wise through three quarters turned into a fight for survival in the 4th quarter for Gaffney. The Indians stopped a 4th and goal at the 2 yard line with 33 seconds left to preserve the victory 21 to 14.

We have made it to Week 1 of the High School football season which is the official opening of what should be another exciting season in South Carolina. There are some very interesting games on the schedule, so lets look at some of them.

Dorman @ Gaffney..... The Indians played last week and held on to defeat Boiling Springs 21 to 14. Dorman played in a jamboree and was impressive against Laurens. These two rivals have a history of close games and this one should be no different..... Dorman 17 Gaffney 13
For a more in depth preview of this game go to the Tribe Blitz link on this page.

Hoover, Alabama vs Byrnes @ Rock Hill, SC..... This will be an interesting game to see if Byrnes can play with Hoover with all of the graduation loses the Rebels had from last season..... Hoover 24 Byrnes 16

Union County @ Spartanburg..... I see the Vikings building from the momentum of their strong showing in the playoffs last season..... Spartanburg 23 Union County 14

South Pointe @ Northwestern..... This is another national game as it is on TV after the Byrnes vs Hoover game. South Pointe might have the best player on the field, but Northwestern has the best team..... Northwestern 27 South Pointe 20

Chase, NC @ Chesnee..... The Eagles are hoping to get off to a flying start against Chase. They will..... Chesnee 28 Chase 10

Boiling Springs @ Greenwood..... The Bulldogs didn't quit last week against Gaffney, but fell short. They give another good run this week, but come up short on the road..... Greenwood 20 Boiling Springs 16

Chesterfield @ Timmonsville..... The three time defending 1A Champion Chesterfield Rams start their season where they left off last season, with a win..... Chesterfield 27
Timmonsville 14

Greer @ Rock Hill..... The Yellow Jackets were impressive in their Week 0 opener against Seneca. They will have a much stronger opponent this week as they play the Bearcats..... Rock Hill 21 Greer 14

McBee @ Blacksburg..... The Wildcats of the Iron City try to get off to a winning start against McBee. They will come up short..... McBee 17 Blacksburg 14

The ArmChair Coach will be at the Dorman @ Gaffney game Friday night. Go out and support your favorite team.

Until Next Week.

TALE OF TWO QUARTERBACKS

With the start of the College football season just a couple of weeks away, there are two Quarterbacks that continue to be in the news together. I am talking about Clemson QB Kyle Parker and former Clemson QB Willy Korn. Last year they were battling each other on the practice field to see who was going to be Clemson's new starting QB. As we know Kyle Parker beat out Willy Korn and led the Tigers to the ACC Atlantic Division Title and a birth in the ACC Championship Game. Since the end of last football season, both QB's continued to be in the news with Willy Korn deciding to transfer to Marshall and Kyle Parker having an outstanding season for the Tigers baseball team fueling speculation as whether he might be a high draft pick in the Major League Baseball draft. While leading the Tigers to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska the Colorado Rockies made Kyle Parker the 26th pick of the first round in the MLB draft. Willy Korn was preparing to go to Marshall University and win the starting QB position for the Thundering Herd. Kyle Parker and his family had set the date of July 20th to sign with the Rockies to play baseball only. Reportedly the Parkers wanted $3 million to play only baseball and the Rockies offered $2.2 million. So around midnight on the 20th Kyle Parker informed Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney that he was going to play football this fall. As the fall camps for College football teams began to open around the country the speculation about whether Willy Korn could go to Marshall and beat out 4 or 5 other QB's for the starting job began to mount. Down at Clemson, as Kyle Parker was going through fall practice with the Tigers, the speculation of would he and the Rockies come to a contract agreement by the August 16 deadline was on the news and sports talk shows on a daily basis. Up at Marshall late last week the news surfaced that Willy Korn was not going to be the starting QB for the Thundering Herd. He was not going to be a QB at all for the Herd. He was 5th on the depth chart and Marshall Head Coach Doc Holiday was moving Korn to Safety. Reports were that Willy Korn was ok with the move. Korn was not present at the Marshall fan day on Sunday fueling speculation that he might be thinking of transferring. Back at Clemson the news all day on Monday the 16th was will he or won't he sign with the Rockies. Minutes before midnight Kyle Parker and the Rockies came to and agreement and he signed a contract for $1.4 million. It cost Kyle Parker $800,000 to play football for the Clemson Tigers this fall. I know Clemson is a great place but $800,000 great! He must not need the money like I do. Meanwhile in the Willy Korn camp, the speculation about Korn transferring again turned out to be true as he has now enrolled at Division 2 North Greenville University. Surely he can win the starting QB job with the Crusaders as they are in bad need for a QB! The stories of these two young QB's continue to be interesting and connected and The ArmChair Coach wishes both of them the best.

DID YOU KNOW? Kyle Parker is the only Division 1 athlete to throw 20 TD passes and hit 20 HR's in the same school year. He did it during the 2009-2010 school year.

FOOTBALL FEVER ANYONE??

Well after a hiatus for a few weeks, The ArmChair Coach is back and he has a very bad fever to deal with. The doctor has diagnosed me with a severe case of FOOTBALL FEVER! Does anyone else have FOOTBALL FEVER? For those of us who are suffering from it I would like to look at some of the interesting story lines that I am looking forward to seeing how they will play out as the season gets underway in a few weeks.

(1) Will he or won't he? I am talking about Brett Favre and his status of retiring from the NFL or playing for the Minnesota Vikings for a second season. The ArmChair Coach feels like that he will play if his injured ankle heels enough to allow him to suit up in the Vikings purple again. It will be very interesting.

(2) How will the Clemson Tigers do without star C.J. Spiller? Being a big Clemson fan The ArmChair Coach is really interested in how this story plays out. I feel like that Andre Ellington and Jaime Harper are very good backs and will do a good job. The Tigers will probably have more of a power running game and ball control offense. Stay tuned.

(3) Will Interim Head Coach Dan Jones get the permanent job with the Gaffney Indians? I am a huge Gaffney Indians fan and I was very upset when Phil Strickland left back in the spring. I feel very strong that the Cherokee County School District did the right thing keeping Dan Jones as the Interim Head Coach for the 2010 season. Dan Jones has been a very successful Defensive Coordinator for the past seven years and he knows what it takes to win State Championships. The ArmChair Coach says The Pride and Tradition Continues. Stay plugged in.

(4) Will Carolina Panthers Head Coach John Fox keep his job past this season? With no Jake Delhomme on the team this season, the Panthers have to find a new QB. Matt Moore played well at the end of last season and goes into the season as the starting QB. Will he be pushed by second round draft pick Jimmy Clausen for the starting job at some point during the season? The play of the QB's could be a major factor to John Fox keeping his job or not. Do I see Bill Cowher roaming the Panther's sideline next season? Maybe.

(5) Will the SEC win another National Title this season? With LSU, Florida and Alabama winning titles the last three years, who wins this year? I see the SEC being a little down this season. Could Arkansas or South Carolina sneak into the title picture this season? Probably not. Could we be crowning Boise State National Champs this year? With the SEC's big three down a little this year you never know. It will be a very interesting season. Stay tuned.

These are some of the many intriguing stories we will get to see unfold as the 2010 football seasons begin soon.

Until Next Time.

STORYBOOK ENDING FOR CHESNEE'S DEAN JONES

It has been a long and successful coaching career for Dean Jones at Chesnee High School. He has been the Head Coach of the Eagles baseball team for 47 years. He has had some great teams and some great players over the years in Chesnee. He had three Baseball State Championships in the decade of the 1980's. He is why Chesnee is known as a baseball school and town. He announced awhile back that the 2010 baseball season would be his last at the helm of the Chesnee Eagles baseball program. The Eagles were coming off of a successful season in 2009, but they lost in the State Championship Series to Bishop England. The Eagles returned several key and talented players for this years team, including arguably the best pitcher that Coach Jones has had in his 47 years in Chesnee Brandon Henderson. The setting was set for Coach Dean Jones to go out with a storybook ending and win the State Championship in his last season before retirement. The Eagles rolled through their regular season winning their Region Championship, setting the stage for their playoff run. The Eagles won their District Title and the 2A Upperstate Championship, pretty much without breaking a sweat. So the setting was right for Coach Dean Jones to go into retirement with a storybook ending and win another State Championship. The Eagles had to go on the road to Hannahan for the first game of the best of three State Championship Series. The Eagles rolled to a 10 to 0 victory behind ace pitcher Brandon Henderson. So the stage was set for the Chesnee Eagles to come home to Dean Jones Baseball Stadium and win the State Championship for Dean Jones in his final home game in the stadium that is named for him. Not only would it be a storybook ending for an illustrious career, but a Best Selling story as well, to win at home. The Eagles came out nervous and fell behind in the game 3 to 0 going to the bottom of the 7th inning. The Eagles rallied to within 3 to 2, but came up a run short of the Best Seller. The Eagles and the Hawks had to travel to Lexington for the third and deciding game of the series and Coach Jones had his ace Brandon Henderson ready for the challenge. The Chesnee Eagles rolled to another shutout by Henderson and the 2010 2A State Baseball Championship. The win gave Coach Dean Jones his 4th State Championship in his 47th and last season with the Chesnee Eagles. The Chesnee Eagles and Head Coach Dean Jones didn't get their Best Seller, but they got their storybook ending.

DID YOU KNOW? Chesnee ace pitcher Brandon Henderson was drafted in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Until Next Time.

COACH PHIL STRICKLAND LEAVES GAFFNEY

Gaffney High School Indians Head Football Coach and Athletics Director Phil Strickland shocked the Indian Nation on Tuesday as he announced that he was stepping down from the Indians program after seven seasons of leading the most storied program in South Carolina High School football history. Strickland has decided to accept the Head Coaching position at 2A Newberry. Phil Strickland came to Gaffney in 2003 and resurrected the storied Gaffney program after three consecutive losing seasons. He reestablished the discipline and winning attitude of the proud Indians program, in his first season at the helm, leading the Tribe to a 14 and 1 record and the 4A Division 1 State Championship. In Strickland's seven seasons at Gaffney he had a 76 and 23 record and three 4A Division 1 State Championships. Five of his Gaffney teams made it at least to the State Semi-final game. The Gaffney Indians should be one of the teams to beat in Class 4A in the fall as they return several talented players from their 10 and 4 team of 2009.

Sources have said that the surprise resignation came because of conflicts between Coach Strickland and the Cherokee County School Board and administration. Strickland had not seen eye-to-eye with school board members for the past few years. The relationship between Phil Strickland and the School Board has been deteriorating since the controversy of building the new Gaffney High School football stadium. Phil Strickland decided on Tuesday that he had had enough and he walked away from the Indians program saying "I am tired of beating my head against a brick wall." The ArmChair Coach thinks that the Cherokee County School Board is the one that needs to leave. Phil Strickland did not deserve to be treated like this!! Phil Strickland will land on his feet, because he is a great football coach and a great human being. The Gaffney Indians will survive and land on their feet because of their Pride and Tradition.

Until Next Time.

ATLANTA BRAVES 2010 PREVIEW

The Atlanta Braves had a good season last year as they were in the wild card race until the last week of the season. They came up short of the playoffs but had a 86 and 76 record. Lets look at how the 2010 Atlanta Braves stack up against the rest of the National League.

STARTING PITCHING

The Atlanta Braves are known for their starting pitching. During their run of 14 consecutive Division Championships Pitching was the name of the game. Since their run of winning Division Championships pitching has not been as good in Atlanta. The Braves made very good progress last season as they had probably the deepest starting rotation in the National League. This season has a chance to be even better. They will have rookie phenom Tommy Hanson for a full season in the Big Leagues after his stellar rookie season. They get a new and improved Tim Hudson back for hopefully the full season after Tommy John surgery. They have Jair Jurrgens back after his season of a 2.60 ERA. Jurrgens has established himself as one of the best young pitchers in the National League. They have veteran Derek Lowe back after he led the staff in wins last season. Replacing the traded Javier Vasquez in the rotation will be Kenshin Kawakami who was the Braves dragon slayer last season with wins over some of Baseballs biggest name pitchers. Again the Braves appear to have one of the best starting rotations in the National League.

BULLPEN

The Braves lost Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez from their bullpen from last season, but appear to have put together potentially their strongest bullpen in several years. They have Peter Moylan back as one of the leagues best set-up men. Kris Medlin sort of found his niche at the end of last year as a middle reliever and possible starter. The Braves also have lefty Eric O'Flairraty as a solid lefthander out of the pen. The Braves added Takashi Saito as a veteran late inning set-up man. Saito also has closer experience which should give the pen a lot of flexibility. The biggest addition to the pen could be veteran left handed flamethrower Billy Wagner as the closer. If he can bounce back from Tommy John surgery, he could be the Braves most reliable closer since John Smoltz had the closer job. The Bullpen looks solid.

LINE-UP

For most of last season the Braves line-up struggled to hit Homeruns and to score runs consistently, but they did have a couple of breakout players in Yunell Escobar and Martin Prado. Escobar had a solid season with 14 HR and 76 RBI's and Prado hit over .300 for the season and won the 2nd base job. The Braves need a strong comeback season from Chipper Jones as he only had 17 HR's and 72 RBI's and batted .265. The Braves still have Allstar catcher Brian McCann as the anchor of the middle of the line-up. The Braves hope that a full season with Nate McClouth will get him back to the Allstar status he enjoyed while with the Pirates. The Braves acquired OF Melky Cabrerra in the Javy Vasquez trade with the Yankees and he will share LF with old reliable Matt Diaz. The missing ingredient to the Braves line-up could be highly touted rookie RF Jason Heyward. The 20 year old phenom won the job in the spring and is the talk of Baseball coming into the season. He is what you call a five tool player and should add needed power to the Braves line-up. Another piece the Braves added to their line-up was the signing of veteran Troy Glaus to play 1B. The Braves feel like he is healthy and ready to produce the power that he has produced in the past.

The Braves line-up would not be complete without the contributions of their bench. The Braves have veteran catcher David Ross, Omar Infante, who can play the IF and the OF, they also acquired veteran IF and OF Eric Hinske and they have IF Brooks Conrad who played well at times in a reserve roll in parts of last season. With the help of their bench, I see the Braves line-up to have the potential to be more productive than last season.

INTANGIBLES

Longtime Braves Manager Bobby Cox has said that this is his last season in the dugout as the Braves Manager. How will this effect the team? I believe it will be a positive for the team as it will be a motivating factor for them during a long and difficult season. They want to give Bobby Cox one last taste of the Post Season and a chance to send him out as a big winner.

OUTLOOK

I see this being a very successful season in Atlanta as the Braves will be contenders all season. I believe they will fall short of the Division Championship but they will win the Wild Card and make the playoffs.

Until Next Time.

NOT SHOCKED BY OLIVER PURNELL LEAVING CLEMSON!

Most people associated with Clemson University, fans, coaches, players, administration and the Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips were shocked by Oliver Purnell leaving Clemson to go to DePaul. The ArmChair Coach was not shocked. I knew his time at Clemson was drawing near, as he had gotten the Clemson basketball program to places that it had not been before. The Tigers had won 20-plus games four years in a row, a program first. The Tigers had gotten to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, even though they lost in the first round all three years. Just two years ago the Tigers made it all the way to the ACC Tournament Championship Game a feat that had not happened since the 1960's. Oliver Purnell has made basketball relevant at Clemson University, where football is king. Purnell has taken a little heat recently because he hasn't won a NCAA Tournament game in his career. He was 0 and 3 at Clemson and 0and 3 at his other stops at Old Dominion and Dayton. Oliver Purnell has made the expectations for Clemson basketball higher than it has ever been. Just getting to the NCAA Tournament is not enough any longer at Clemson, they expect to win NCAA Tournament games. Purnell has also brought in some very talented players in recent years to Clemson. Players that they would not have gotten in years past. So the bottom line is Oliver Purnell has done a very good job at Clemson but the writing was on the wall for The ArmChair Coach and for Purnell himself, HE HAD TAKEN CLEMSON AS FAR AS HE COULD TAKE THEM! I sort of thought that he might stay one more season, but the challenge of rebuilding a former proud program at DePaul was to intriguing to pass up, for a coach that has a passion for building programs. Clemson needs to take its time to bring in the right coach, one that can take their basketball program to the next step. Whom ever that coach might be should thank Oliver Purnell for laying the ground work by resurrecting Clemson basketball. THANKS COACH OLIVER PURNELL!

Until Next Time.

MARCH MADNESS IS MADNESS!!!

Well March Madness has been just that, MADNESS. The first two rounds this season has been some of the most surprising and exciting college basketball that I have ever watched from the comfort of my ArmChair. We are down to the Sweet 16 and we still have four teams with a seed of 9 or higher left in the tournament. We have already lost one of the NO. 1 seeds in Kansas, who lost to NO. 9 seed Northern Iowa in the 2nd round. We have already lost one of the NO. 2 seeds in Villanova, who lost to NO. 10 seed St. Mary's College in the 2nd round. We have had overtime games, double overtime games and buzzer beaters all over the first two rounds of the Madness so far. We have also had some injuries, with Michigan State and West Virginia losing key players for the remainder of the tournament. Even with all of the close games we have still had some dominating performances, as Kentucky comes to mind with their two blowouts of East Tennessee State and Wake Forest. We still have three NO. 1 seeds left in the Madness and we still have three NO. 2 seeds left as well. I know I have my super glue ready to glue myself to my ArmChair for the games starting with Thursday evenings games. Let take a look at the match-ups.

MARCH MADNESS SWEET 16 MATCH-UPS

Northern Iowa (No. 9 Seed) vs Michigan State (No. 5 Seed) in the Midwest Regional..... I think the Cinderella Northern Iowa gets to the Elite 8.

Tennessee (NO. 6 Seed) vs Ohio State (NO. 2 Seed) in the Midwest Regional..... I see Ohio State sending the Volunteers back to Rocky Top.

Butler (NO. 5 Seed) vs Syracuse (NO. 1 Seed) in the West Regional..... I see Butler seeing Orange all the way back home, as Syracuse makes Elite 8.

Xavier (NO. 6 Seed) vs Kansas State (NO. 2 Seed) in the West Regional..... Xavier has already beaten a Gopher and a Panther in the Madness so far. They will add a Wildcat to their trophy case as Xavier goes to the Elite 8.

Cornell (NO. 12 Seed) vs Kentucky (NO. 1 Seed) in the East Regional..... The Big Red will be the Big Dead as Kentucky rolls to the Elite 8.

Washington (NO. 11 Seed) vs West Virginia (NO. 2 Seed) in the East Regional..... I see the Washington Huskies taking advantage of West Virginia being without starting point guard. Washington in an upset to the Elite 8.

Purdue (NO. 4 Seed) vs Duke (NO. 1 Seed) in the South Regional..... So far the Duke Blue Devils haven't had much competition in the Madness. Duke rolls to the Elite 8.

St. Mary's (NO. 10 Seed) vs Baylor (NO. 3 Seed) in the South Regional..... So far Baylor hasn't played anybody good in the Madness. It will show as St. Mary's continues their march to the Elite 8.

Well I am going to be glued to my ArmChair with my phone to order food delivery, have my ice chest full of my favorite beverage and my remote in hand. The only time I will be getting up is to go to the bathroom during commercials. Because it is MARCH MADNESS AND IT IS MADNESS!!!
