GENERAL VIEWS ( 10th Edition )

Well it is time for The ArmChair Coach's mid season report card on the Carolina Panthers. Last season was a pretty good season for the Panthers as they went 12 and 4 and won the NFC South Division and a 1st round playoff bye. The season ended in disappointment with a surprising playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals. So after last season the expectations were very high in Charlotte that the Panthers had a team that could make a Super Bowl run this season. So far this season the Carolina Panthers have a 3 and 5 record at the seasons halfway point. So lets look at why.

PANTHERS QB PLAY

Jake Delhomme ended last season with the worst game in his NFL career against the Cardinals, as he had 5 turnovers in their playoff loss. This season has not gotten any better for Jake as he has only 5 TD passes to 13 INTs, which leads the NFL. Interceptions is not a stat that you want to lead the league in. Delhomme's QB rating is 61.7 for the season, which is not good. So I give the Carolina Panthers QB play a mid season grade F

PANTHERS OFFENSE

The Carolina rushing offense is rated NO. 3 in the NFL averaging 153.0 yards a game. The Panthers passing offense is rated NO. 24 in the NFL averaging 172.1 yards a game. The Panthers are tied for 31st in the NFL in Turnover margin at -9. So Carolina's total offense is rated 21st in the NFL averaging 325.1 yards a game. So I give the Panthers offense a grade of C-

PANTHERS DEFENSE

The Panthers defense got off to a bad start this season but they have started playing better. The Carolina passing defense is rated NO. 6 in the NFL giving up an average of 181.8 yards per game. The Panthers rushing defense is rated NO. 23 in the NFL giving up an average of 122.1 yards per game. The Panthers are giving up an average of 24.5 points per game. The overall total defense rating of the Carolina Panthers is NO. 9 in the NFL as they give up an average of 303.9 yards per game. So I give the Carolina Panthers defense a mid season grade of B

PANTHERS OVERALL HALF SEASON

The Carolina Panthers have an overall record of 3 and 5 playing the NFL's NO. 2 toughest schedule. They were considered one of the NFC's best teams coming into the season but bad QB play, one of the league leaders in turnovers and some injuries on defense has plagued the Panthers through the first half of the season. The Panthers have also had some questionable coaching decisions as well. I give the Panthers an overall mid season grade of D
