HOW TEAMS GOT THEIR NAME- SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS

Today is the second in my series of blogs, How Teams Got Their Name. This one is about the South Carolina Gamecocks. Again, if anyone disputes my findings feel free to comment and tell me what you think.

South Carolina Gamecocks..... During the 1890's, the University of South Carolina's football team struggled and used numerous team nicknames. At the turn of the century, people unofficially called their feisty and battling team Game Cocks. In 1903, a Columbia newspaper shortened the name to one word, and the schools teams have been called Gamecocks ever since. The University of South Carolina is the only major university that uses Fighting Gamecocks as its team name.

A Gamecock is a fighting rooster known for its spirit and courage to fight till it's death. The state of South Carolina has historically been associated with breeding and training of fighting gamecocks. Cockfighting has been outlawed throughout most of the United States, but still exist in some areas illegally.

My Week 2 Football Picks will be available on Thursday afternoon September 1, 2011.

Until Next Time.
